Free Workshop: How to Talk to Your Child About Race w/Carol Swainson -- CANCELLED

This interactive workshop will provide participants with experiences, practice, resources, and tools to navigate conversations about race with their children. Participants will gain an understanding of the historical and psychological factors that make it difficult to engage in this critical discourse. Participants will also begin the process of planning for future education and practice on the topic of race. Carol Swainson’s career has afforded her opportunities to work in K-12 independent and public elementary and middle schools across the country. She has taught nearly every discipline, including math and science in Spanish, and has been a classroom teacher for third graders through adults. Carol is currently the Head of School at San Francisco Schoolhouse and serves as a peer affinity group facilitator at the National Association for Independent School’s (NAIS) People of Color Conference. She has also been a member of NAIS’ Call-to-Action, a national think tank for diversity. Prior to joining Schoolhouse, she served as Head of Bentley School’s K-8 program and as Associate Head of School at St. James’ Episopal School in Los Angeles. She held leadership positions at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and Head-Royce School in Oakland, served as Diversity Coordinator and French and Spanish teacher at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.
